"Antwerp" continues telling the picaresque adventures through the world of multi disciplinary artist and professional prisoner Tulse Luper. This movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival as a separate title located between the first and the second part of the Greenanway Tulse Luper Trilogy.
The character Tulse Luper has been featured (though rarely seen) in several of Peter Greenaway's earlier film works, and in The Tulse Luper Suitcases a substantial portion of Greenaway's output is briefly presented as if it had been filmed by Luper.
Tulse Luper, a determined optimist, and a compulsive writer and scribbler, imprisoned in a hotel bathroom in the Grand Railway Station Hotel in Antwerp, has his copious writings investigated and transcribed by orders ofthe Antwerp stationmaster, by Cissie Colpitts, a woman who will become his life-long lover.
The first of three parts, we follow Tulse Luper in three distinct episodes: as a child during the first World War, as an explorer in Mormon Utah, and as a writer in Belgium during the rise of fascism. Packed with stylistic flourishes, it's a dense, comic study of 20th century history, revolving around the contents of one man's suitcases.
The Tulse Luper Suitcases, Episode 3. Antwerp goes slightly overboard, giving us a complete days worth of a story. Welcome to Peter Greenaway’s newest endeavor, a packaged compilation of films, DVDs, website, television, books and god knows what else.
Tulse Luper is a fictional character, created by film director Peter Greenaway. "Born in Newport (Greenaway's own birthplace) in 1911, Luper was, according to Greenaway's introduction to the exhibition catalogue, in Moab, Utah in 1928 when "Uranium was 'discovered' there. He was in Antwerp in 1939 when the Germans invaded Belgium. He was in Rome when the Americans arrived in 1944.
